A man who fitted bamboo flooring in his home as part of a DIY project has been given an award for his efforts.

Larry Rose, who lives in Truckee, California, won third prize in the Cali Bamboo National Project of the Month contest for his new kitchen, the Sierra Sun reports.

Mr Rose used bamboo for his floor and cabinets as he set about building his kitchen, with the renewable and sustainable qualities of the material winning him the prize.

Vice-president of Cali Bamboo Tanner Haidwood commented: "We applaud Larry for implementing stylish architectural and interior designs in his kitchen without impacting the environment."

Mr Rose has also installed bamboo in other rooms in his house.

Elsewhere in California, bamboo flooring has been fitted as part of a green project being carried out on a commercial scale.

IT firm Aviat Networks has installed this as part of a wider eco-friendly theme at its new 128,000 sq ft headquarters in Silicon Valley.
